Topic: Issues facing U.S. cities, particularly budgets that are forcing job cutbacks in local public safety, public works, health, and social services. Some cities are shutting off lights during various hours, and some are even cutting police forces. The National League of Cities says local governments may wind up cutting 500,000 jobs in the near future as a result of local budget shortfalls. This is at time many financially strapped residents are more dependent than ever on their local governments to help them.
